Wildlife, in general, can be very unpredictable and whilst we will endeavour to give all of our visitors the best possible wildlife experience, it can not always be assured that they will turn up at a particular time or venue as required or expected.
Tours around Red Kite territories will not take place during the months of March, April, May and June. Alternative wildlife and local historical tours are available on request.
If you have a specific area of interest you would like to cover in your tour please let us know and we can make your tour as tailored to your interests as we can.
Own transport is required.
RED KITE WINTER ROOST WATCH
2 hours, evening only, approx 4pm-6pm according to sunset times.
Escorted tour to viewpoints around the stunning rolling hills and drumlins of South Down. As you gaze at the beautiful scenery, you and your Guide will look to the skies for the Red Kites as they come in to roost, against the backdrop of the Mourne Mountains and the Dromara Hills. Ravens, Buzzards, Sparrowhawks and even Peregrine falcons make this landscape their home too.
WINTER ROOSTS BY SUNSET
Start your tour where it all began at the beautiful viewpoint overlooking Slieve Croob and watch for Ravens and Red Kites wheeling and soaring on the thermals. Continue along the river valley to our second viewpoint this time looking over the Mountains of Mourne. We then take a walk up over the old lane to watch the Red Kites soar over our heads as we go.
Short break for hot refreshments and home-made cake, then moving on to take in another roost site and finishing off with the spectacular Starling murmuration at Slieve Croob.
COAST AND COUNTRYSIDE
General tour to include Red Kites, Seals and Waders. Look for Brent geese, Lapwing, Greenshank or Godwits. Find the Grey and Harbour seal haul- out spot. All day tour around Dundrum Bay, Murlough Beach, Red Kite roost sites and Starling murmuration. A bird watcher's paradise, a mecca for lovers of all wildlife.
Check out the local historic sites, dating back to neolithic times at Legananny Dolmen or the Finnis Souterrain on your way to watching the Red Kites come in to roost as the sun sets over the Mournes.
All tours begin at The Square, Castlewellan, County Down.
